Directing can really be a drag. I rmemeber back in drama class when I had to direct a scene from my book. Is that the assignment you're doing? I'm sure that you'll think of something soon. I mean, hlaf the art of comign up with something is giving it some time. If that doesn;'t work, then try out a variety of things, see how it works out. Make sure actors/actresses around turning their back on the audience or blocking each other.
I'm sure it will all work out in the end. You could also ask what their ideas are.
As hating the experience, all I can suggest is that you just let the people know that they're mark is in tragity if they don't work.
